An illustrated brand bright enough to broadcast

The brief in brief

Writer, broadcaster, and podcaster Emma Gannon came to me to redesign the artwork for her Webby nominated podcast Ctrl Alt Delete, after we’d worked together on some illustrated social content for the same show. Since then, we’ve been working together with her publisher to create a new US cover for her Sunday Times Bestselling business book The Multi-Hyphen Method.

The process

Having worked together on a series of portraits and quotes based on some of the most popular episodes of her podcast, Emma and I had a strong working relationship and sense of each other’s styles.

We took her previous branding, which had been used on her first book, also called Ctrl Alt Delete, and earlier editions of her podcast, as a starting piece of inspiration. Taking ideas for the lettering from that imagery and fusing it with Emma’s love of a bold colour, aligning the bright yellow with the cover of her then new book The Multi-Hyphen Method we tested out a range of layouts.

Knowing the key things listeners were looking for was the podcast title, host, and something distinctive to find in their libraries, often at a very small size, we opted for a simple layout that clearly featured a portrait of Emma. Then all that was left was to refine the illustrations.

Due to the success of Ctrl Alt Delete's branding, when it was time for The Multi-Hyphen Method to be launched in the US with a new title and cover Emma's publishers reached out to me to give The Multi-Hyphen Life a refresh.

The lettering and colourway was inspired by the podcast cover. But we decided to go with something that didn't feel as distinctly feminine with the inclusion of the blue. I wanted the multi-colour facets of the lettering to reflect the way Emma talks about a single person having the opportunity to have multitude of skills and experiences within them.

A selection of my favourite brand illustration projects.

The final product

The bright yellow illustrated branding for Ctrl Alt Delete has become central to Emma’s brand. It’s been used across her presence on the web as well as in her frequent speaking events. It’s distinctive colour has supported the podcast to stand out in the charts (where it’s frequently featured).
